iOS Search Ads Data Is Now Your Best ASO Keyword Lab

Why Traditional ASO Keyword Tools Are Flying Blind

Most ASO practitioners still open a third-party keyword tool, sort by volume estimate, and paste the top results into their metadata. The problem? Those volume scores are modeled guesses. Apple does not publish search volume data publicly, so every tool is triangulating from panel data and app-store scraping. The margin of error is enormous.

Apple Search Ads, on the other hand, hands you real impression counts, tap-through rates, and conversion rates for every single keyword you bid on. That is first-party signal straight from the algorithm that also powers organic search. If a keyword drives strong conversion in a paid campaign, the App Store algorithm already knows users who search that term are primed to install your app. That is the insight your organic metadata should be built around.

The Three-Step Mining Process

Step 1: Run a Broad Match Discovery Campaign for 14 Days

Set up a dedicated Apple Search Ads Advanced campaign with a single ad group. Use broad match on your five to eight core terms and set your CPT bid high enough to win impressions across the long tail. Keep daily budget modest — this is a research exercise, not a scale play. After 14 days you will have a Search Terms report with hundreds of real queries your competitors' keyword tools have never seen.

Step 2: Score Every Term by Conversion Rate, Not Volume

Export the Search Terms report and filter to keywords with at least 30 impressions. Now sort by conversion rate (installs divided by taps), not by tap volume. High-volume terms that convert below 20 percent are usually informational queries — users browsing, not buying. Terms that convert above 40 percent, even with modest volume, reveal genuine purchase intent. These are your metadata gold.

Create three buckets:

  • Gold (40 %+ CVR): Priority targets for your title, subtitle, and first keyword field position.
  • Silver (25–40 % CVR): Strong candidates for the full keyword field and in-app event names.
  • Bronze (below 25 % CVR): Monitor only — do not waste metadata space here.

Step 3: Map Keywords to Metadata Real Estate With a Strict Priority Order

Apple indexes your app title with the heaviest weighting, followed by the subtitle, then the keyword field. Every character counts. Place your single highest-CVR Gold keyword in the title if it fits naturally. Use the 30-character subtitle to cover your second and third Gold terms. Then compress Silver terms into the 100-character keyword field, comma-separated with no spaces after commas (spaces waste indexable characters).

One frequently missed tactic: do not repeat any word across title, subtitle, and keyword field. Apple already indexes a word that appears in your title — re-entering it in the keyword field burns space you could use on an incremental term.

Automating the Feedback Loop With Skilmark

Running this process manually every sprint is the real bottleneck. Skilmark's ASO Metadata engine connects directly to your Search Ads data, scores keywords by CVR automatically, and drafts updated title, subtitle, and keyword field copy that respects character limits and avoids duplication. You review, approve, and deploy — no spreadsheet archaeology required.

The engine also flags when a keyword you are targeting organically starts losing paid CVR, which is an early warning that user intent around that term is shifting. Catching that signal two weeks early lets you swap metadata before your organic ranking erodes.

One More Lever: Custom Product Pages as Keyword Validators

Before you commit a new keyword to your canonical metadata, test it as a Custom Product Page paired with a Search Ads exact-match campaign. If the CPP variant converts better than your default page for that query, you have both a keyword and a creative angle worth promoting into your main listing. This two-step validation approach cuts wasted metadata experiments by roughly half.

The Bottom Line

The App Store algorithm rewards relevance, and relevance is measured by conversion behavior — not keyword density. Mining your own Search Ads conversion data gives you a feedback loop that is faster and more accurate than any panel-based tool. Build that loop, automate it, and your metadata will compound in ranking power every single sprint.
